How to register your BSN Number in Netherlands, Amsterdam
P.S. You can’t apply for your BSN number online – need to book for an appointment online and do a physical appointment yourself (can’t be done online).
Funny info: I fly to Amsterdam 1 day to make the BSN number that is the base for everything and flu back in the evening.
To be able to have time to search for a long term apartment for rent:
- Request for BSN number with registration in temporary RNI database for non residents (valid for 4 months).
Like this you have 4 months time to find apartment for you & sign a rent contract and register as a residence in your municipality.

TIP: If you are just flying in for day trip, best would be to fly in early, take an appointment around noon and then you have plenty of time to get back to the airport. You can reach almost all of these municipalities with maximum of 2h in Netherlands that you find in the list.

They might ask what are you doing in Netherlands?
You could say that you are still looking for a work and when you find one (even if you already find one or even signed a contract),
and will take appointment for the permanent BSN number in the municipality that you will go live in (and you are still not decided what city / municipality, that also will depends where you will find job.
If after 4 months you still haven’t find a house to rent (normal), you can register to your job office address for 3 months.
Decide what city you want to rent the house, you could try Amsterdam first.
but step nr 1. will give you a total of 6/7 months time to find a house to rent in Amsterdam & surroundings.
Find a house in the city you like or around it (commute is always around 1 hour), for example: Haarlem, Utrecht, Almere & Leiden.
Even Rotterdam, if you, for example, need to work in the office only for 2 days of a week.
Book appointment to municipality you are looking house to, for example Amsterdam.
Because, can be, they will give you the appointment for the interview, only for in 3 months!

What is needed for the interview.
– original birth certificate in English
– Your valid passport
– Singed rent contract to a house that allows registration (Make sure to ask the owner / makelaar before signing the contract can you (and your partner, both register in the house).
You can rent a house maximum 1-2 years, most of the time. So everybody needs to change house every 1-2 years because of Dutch law.

Make sure to study & apply for 30% ruling also (discount on taxes first 5 years). You will receive money back even for months that you paid taxes before you applied.
Even if you already found a house to rent, registration of your BSN number Amsterdam is impossible in short term.
Make an appointment as soon as possible, meaning as soon as you are accepted for a job in Netherlands, as getting an appointment 3 months from not to register your BSN number is normal post-COV ID.
